The Rauhnächte (or Raunächte / Rauhnacht) are the 12 holy nights between Christmas (December 24th / 25th) and Epiphany. In some other traditions, the Rauhnächte begin on December 21st, the day of the winter solstice.

The twelve days/nights symbolize the twelve months of the new year and predict the events of the corresponding month.

It is a time of silence, introspection, looking back on the old year and looking ahead to the coming year.
